Which Teams Will Participate in the Champions League 2023-24 Group Stage?

As mentioned earlier, the Champions League 2023-24 group stage will feature a total of 32 football teams. Of these, 26 clubs have secured direct entry into the draw, while an additional six clubs will join them after winning in the qualifiers.

Qualified teams are categorized into four pots:

  • Pot 1 includes the title holders, Europa League winners, and champions of the top six national leagues based on UEFA country coefficients.
  • The remaining three pots are determined by a team’s UEFA club coefficient.

The final allocations for Pot 3 and Pot 4 will be determined after the playoff fixtures, just before the draw. It’s important to note that two teams from the same football association cannot be drawn into the same group during the draw.

UEFA has already revealed the seedings for the 2023/24 Champions League group stage draw. Many qualified teams already know which pot they’ve been placed in for the upcoming season’s edition.

Following their 1-0 victory in the final against Inter Milan, Manchester City has earned a place in Pot 1 as titleholders. They share this top pot with Europa League winners Sevilla and champions from Europe’s top six leagues based on UEFA coefficient. Notably, Dutch champions Feyenoord, hailing from a seventh-placed association, also find themselves in Pot 1, courtesy of Manchester City’s Premier League triumph.

Pot 2 is particularly intriguing, boasting five teams with multiple Champions League victories. This includes the likes of 14-time winners Real Madrid and three-time champions Manchester United and Inter. The remaining pots are comprised of teams based on UEFA’s coefficient score.

The last two pots have open slots that will be filled after the qualifying rounds conclude. Consequently, Real Sociedad, Celtic, and Newcastle remain unassigned to their respective pots, pending the results of the playoff round.

Meanwhile, Union Berlin and Lens are the only two teams already placed in Pot 4, reflecting their limited Champions League experience.
